It
is said that the audiences of The Trip to Bountiful sing along with
Cicely Tyson as she sings the old hymn Blessed Assurance. It's
funny...I grew up in the Southern Baptist church and haven't stepped
foot inside one for probably 50 years, haven't sung this song for at
least that long and yet the words came back to me as I read the headline
on this Broadway show. 'Memory is a funny ole thing' as my dear mother
in law might have said. It does not bow to change in circumstance nor
belief...
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels, descending, bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
